Artists' Statement
I bought my first camera from a second hand shop for 50p when I was about 7. Three and a half years and many, many films later I asked for an SLR for my eleventh birthday. I've amassed another seven cameras since then, allowing me to use polaroid, medium format and digital technologies as well as 35mm film.
Despite this early and continuing interest in Photography, until 1998 my main sphere of artwork
was figurative painting. Since then, however, I have concentrated
on Photography. I became a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic
Society in 1999. For years, my photographs have been a celebration
of the visual world, pointing out the details that I want others
to enjoy. Looking at a body of this work, I can see that I have
tended to abstract the small details, simplifying what I see to
its essential shapes and tones. Where people are present, they are
anonymous, without faces, and usually overshadowed by their surroundings.
While I do still produce work of this type, I also
now work in ways that combine my other art interests (painting,
digital imagery and installation work) with photography. A study of masculinity focusing primarily on "Ultimate Males" -
men's heroes, and the spaces they inhabit in both mind and reality -
led to an installation first shown in part in the Lightgeist
exhibitions, from October 2002. At present I am working on images and installations that make explicit the relationship between photography, geometry and aesthetics. |
